ONE HEALTH ACADEMY - Dr. Cheryl Stroud on Advancing the One Health Movement: Our Ray of Hope for the Future - THURSDAY, JUNE 14th! American Society for Microbiology! - Friday, June 02, 2017

THURSDAY, JUNE 14th! American Society for Microbiology!

Dr. Cheryl Stroud on Advancing the One Health Movement: Our Ray of Hope for the Future

Who?

Dr. Stroud has enjoyed professional experiences in industry, academic research / teaching, private veterinary practice, and One Health. After graduation from Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she worked briefly in small animal Veterinary practice before going to North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine for a Masters and PhD in Endocrine Physiology. She performed basic research at Pennsylvania State University studying many topics ranging from variant molecular forms of prolactin and growth hormone to reproductive cycles of women from populations around the world. Dr. Stroud returned to private veterinary practice when her family moved to Illinois in 1996 for her husband, also a DVM, PhD, to become Director of the Division of Education and Research for the American Veterinary Medical Association. Returning to North Carolina when he retired, she was instrumental in 2010 in creation of the North Carolina One Health Collaborative, chairing its Steering Committee for over three years and facilitating collaborative creation of an inter-institutional One Health course, One Health: Philosophy to Practical Integration of Human, Animal and Environmental Health, cross-listed at Duke, UNC, and NC State. 2017 was the 7th year of its offering.

Dr. Stroud was selected as AVMA representative to the One Health Commission (OHC) in spring 2011, was appointed Vice Chair of the OHC Board in 2012 and became Executive Director of the Commission late in 2013, moving the Commission from Iowa State to the Research Triangle Park region of central North Carolina. Her primary focus since 2010 has been educating locally, nationally and globally about One Health. In 2013, she served on a National Biodefense Science Board working group on Situational Awareness, Strategic Implementation and Bio-Surveillance. Cheryl believes strongly in interdisciplinary collaborations and shares updates about the One Health movement with audiences around the world. She seeks, via the Commission, to connect One Health stakeholders into active teams, creating strategic networks and partnerships that educate about the full scope of and critical need for One Health. She dreams of a day when One Health advocates around the world join hands and unite in a coordinated, true, Global One Health Alliance. She and her husband have a grown son and daughter who still don't 'get' their crazy mom. In her 'spare' time she enjoys horseback riding, gardening, hiking, writing, sewing, reading, making and listening to music, and traveling nationally and internationally.

Survival

One Health, One Planet, One Future

By George R. Lueddeke, PhD

Planet Earth has been here for over 4.5 billion years but in just two

human generations we have managed to place our only "home" at

great risk. Many lessons from history have not yet been learned and

new lessons may prove equally, if not more difficult, to take on board as

we head deeper into this century.

This book highlights two of our greatest social problems: changing the

way we relate to the planet and to each other, and confronting how we

use technology (dataism) for the benefit of humankind and the planet.

Covering a wide range of key topics, including environmental

degradation, modern life, capitalism, robotics, financing of war (vs

peace) and the pressing need to re-orient society toward a sustainable

future, the book contends that education is key to our survival. The

author argues that One Health - recognising the fundamental

interconnections of people, animals, plants, the environment - needs to

inform the UN-2030 Sustainable Development Goals and that we need

to work toward the adoption of a new mind-set: replacing our current

view of limitless resources, exploitation, competition and conflict with

one that respects the sanctity of life and strives toward well-being for

all, shared prosperity and social stability.

Clearly written, evidence-based and transdisciplinary, and including

contributions from the World Bank, Chatham House, UNESCO, World

Economic Forum, the Tripartite One Health Collaboration (FAO, OIE,

WHO), One Health Commission, and more, this book cuts across

sociopolitical, economic and environmental lines. It will be of great

interest to practitioners, academics, policy-makers, students, nongovernment

agencies and the public at large in both developed and

developing nations.

Wilson Center

Internships in DC for Science and Technology Policy

Deadline for Fall Applicants November 15

The Science and Technology Innovation Program (STIP) at the Wilson Center welcomes applicants for spring 2019 internships. STIP focuses on understanding bottom-up, public innovation; top-down, policy innovation; and, on supporting responsible and equitable practices at the point where new technology and existing political, social, and cultural processes converge. We recommend exploring our blog and website first to determine if your research interests align with current STIP programming.

We offer two types of internships: research (open to law and graduate students only) and a social media and blogging internship (open to undergraduates, recent graduates, and graduate students). Research internships might deal with one of the following key objectives:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Citizen Science
  • Cybersecurity
  • One Health
  • Public Communication of Science
  • Serious Games Initiative
  • Science and Technology Policy

Additionally, we are offering specific internships for focused projects, such as for our Earth Challenge 2020 initiative.

Dr. Dennis Carroll

The Future is Coming! Is One Health Ready?

Wednesday, January 9

Who?

Dennis Carroll, Ph.D., currently serves as the director of the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID's) Global Health Security and Development Unit. In this position Dr. Carroll is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for the agency's programs addressing new and emerging disease threats. Dr. Carroll also serves as USAID's special representative for global health security. Dr. Carroll was initially detailed to USAID from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a senior public health advisor in 1991. In 1995 he was named the agency's senior infectious diseases advisor, responsible for overseeing the agency's programs in malaria, tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, disease surveillance, as well as neglected and emerging infectious diseases. In this capacity Dr. Carroll was directly involved in the development and introduction of a range of new technologies for disease prevention and control, including: community-based delivery of treatment of onchocerciasis, rapid diagnostics for malaria, new treatment therapies for drug-resistant malaria, intermittent therapy for pregnant women, and "long-lasting" insecticide treated bed nets for prevention of malaria. He was responsible for the initial design and development of the President's Malaria Initiative. Dr. Carroll officially left CDC and joined USAID in 2005 when he assumed responsibility for leading the USAID response to the spread of avian influenza.

Dr. Carroll has a doctorate in biomedical research with a special focus in tropical infectious diseases from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a research scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory where he studied the molecular mechanics of viral infection. Dr. Carroll has received awards from both CDC and USAID, including the 2006 USAID Science and Technology Award for his work on malaria and avian influenza, and the 2008 Administrator's Management Innovation Award for his management of the agency's Avian and Pandemic Influenza program.

Dr. Joseph Annelli

Does One Health Have a Future?

The Human Condition of Competition, Compromise, and Partnerships

Wednesday, February 13

Who?

Dr. Joseph Annelli is a former USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Veterinary Services Senior Advisor for Agriculture and Health System (One Health Coordinator) and Director of the One Health Coordination Center. He retired this past January after a 32-year career covering a broad range of policy and program development to start his own consulting company "Practical One Health Solutions".

A native of New York, Dr. Annelli received a BS in Biology in 1976 from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY, and a MS in Zoology with an emphasis on Oceanography and Wildlife Management from the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Del La Salle Araneta University in Quezon City, Philippines in 1983 after completing his senior year of clinical practice at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

Throughout his 32 year federal career he was (and still is) an innovative thinker and one who pushed the needle forward with things like eradicating avian influenza from the live bird market system in NYC, eradicating pseudorabies from the US domestic swine herds, introducing the Incident Command System to Veterinary Services, building the APHIS EOC, building emergency programs activities from being a second thought to a world class response organization. He managed USDA's engagement in the White House's Avian and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness implementation plan while on detail to the USDA Secretary's Office, leading the USDA International Avian and Pandemic Influenza Response Team, developing a Crisis Management Center at the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome, leading  USDA on Global Health Security at the White House, initiating the USDA wide One Health Joint Working Group, the Federal Interagency One Health Working Group, and finally founding and leading the USDA One Health Coordination Center.

Today, Dr. Annelli continues to advance the cause of One Health. Post retirement, he has started a consulting business called "Practical One Health Solutions" and has been consulting with the World Health Organization on the development of a Zoonotic Disease Guide and has pulled together a global consortium to submit a proposal on measuring countries National AMR Action Plans, influencing Congress to include One Health in the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness Act to name a few.
