Important International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS) One Health survey request…

October 22, 2014

Dear Colleagues and readers of the One Health Initiative website,

Your assistance is greatly needed to help identify gaps in capacity, information, and networks with regard to One Health Surveillance (OHS) approaches to disease surveillance.

International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS) is conducting a survey to gauge the views of health surveillance professionals worldwide on the motivations and general capabilities for implementing integrated animal, human, and environmental surveillance approaches to solve complex health problems.

The results will help ISDS and other partner organizations to develop and deliver capacity-building activities that meet the priority needs of surveillance professionals in different domains to advance OHS approaches. The survey results will also be used to launch further discussion at the 2014 ISDS Conference.

Your responses will be kept confidential. Please answer every question to the best of your ability. Your survey responses should represent your experiences and perceptions and will not be viewed as the official position of your organization. Feel free to add comments where indicated to clarify your responses.

Please respond to the survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OHSurveillance by Friday November 7, 2014. If you have any questions contact: syndromic@syndromic.org

1st International Who's Who in One Health Webinar - November 10, 2014 - Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Learn more about One Health worldwide from U.S. and international guest commentators…November 10, 2014

1st International Who's Who in One Health Webinar

Notable comments to consider:

Future generations will judge us by how well we – physicians, public health professionals, veterinarians, other health professionals and social science experts – took a One Health approach to solving critical global issues such as climate change and the increase in antimicrobial resistance. Only by doing so now can we hope to protect and ensure the interdependent health of ecosystems and the people, animals and plants that live in them.”

Veterinarian Joann Lindenmayer, DVM, MPH., American Veterinary Medical Association, Biography, One Health Commission Board of Directors Chair.

After witnessing the successive waves of different infections facing our country and our world, a common theme emerges from the MERS Co-V, Salmonella, Entervirus, Flu, MRSA to, of course, Ebola; we as humans are not alone.  What we do with our environment and handling of our animals across the world does somehow affect 'me'.  We are clearly seeing, with outbreaks and epidemics, the overall effects of man's interaction with the world from our management of resources to cultural activities in our communities to our general infection control responses.”

Physician Albert J. Osbahr, III, MD, One Health Commission Board of Directors Past Chair, American Medical Association, Biography

Vaccines against diseases transmitted from animals to humans: A one health paradigm

“This review focuses on the immunization of animals as a means of preventing human diseases (zoonoses). …”

In simple terms, the idea is to develop vaccines that protect domestic animals and wildlife thereby establishing effective barriers against human infections.  Developing animal vaccines are less expensive and are less strictly regulated than are those for humans.  Hopefully a common sense One Health approach can go forward.

One Health Newsletter (USA) now under University of Florida’s Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) Sponsorship - Friday, October 03, 2014

One Health Newsletter (USA) now under University of Florida’s Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI) Sponsorship

“The One Health Newsletter is a collaborative effort by a diverse group of scientists and health professionals committed to promoting One Health.  This quarterly newsletter was created to lend support to the One Health Initiative and is dedicated to enhancing the integration of animal, human, and environmental health for the benefit of all by demonstrating One Health in practice.”

The popular “One Health Newsletter” http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/newsletter.php [http://epi.ufl.edu/onehealth/] has been transferred to the auspices of the outstanding University of Florida’s “Emerging Pathogens Institute” (EPI) which is directed by physician J. Glenn Morris, MD, MPH & TM http://epi.ufl.edu/j-glenn-morris-jr/See the latest issue of One Health Newsletter published – Volume 7, Issue 3 http://media.news.health.ufl.edu/misc/egh/One%20Health%20Newsletter/OHNL_Vol_7_Issue3.pdf.

The Newsletter (OHNL) was originated by the Florida State Department of Health in 2008 and became a major feature of the One Health Initiative team’s One Health Initiative website shortly thereafter.  The University of Florida’s previous “One Health Center of Excellence,” based at the Emerging Pathogens Institute subsequently assumed the support role for the OHNL in 2013. While the One Health Center of Excellence—previously led by One Health Initiative team Honorary Advisory Board member http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/advBoard.php physician Greg Gray, MD, MPH—undergoes changes to its organizational structure, Dr. Morris and the EPI will assume support for the OHNL. The OHNL has become one of the top 5 most widely accessed and read pages on the One Health Initiative website over this past few years.

EPI director Morris, said “The Emerging Pathogens Institute has from its beginning incorporated aspects of human, animal, and environmental health in order to promote the best health outcomes for all. As stated in the purpose and mission of the institute, we aim to provide a world-class research environment to facilitate interdisciplinary studies of emergence and control of human, animal, and plant pathogens. Thus the One Health mission is very important to us, and as such we are honored to further promote One Health research by hosting the world-renowned One Health Newsletter, of which I personally have been a long-time contributor and supporter.“ More about the EPI’s mission and current areas of research can be found at http://epi.ufl.edu/about/.

American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) Endorses One Health Approach

September 26, 2014—In a letter to the One Health Initiative team, American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) President Steve Mulligan said, “…The One Health Initiative provides the ideal platform for this exchange of ideas and can serve as a transformative model for researching and discovering new methodologies for ensuring the health of our natural world.”  Please read complete letter http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/publications/One%20Health%20Initiative.pdf.

According to Joseph M. Conlon, AMCA technical advisor, “The American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) was founded in New Jersey on June 26th 1935, is an international association of individuals and organizations interested in mosquito and other vector control.  Our mission is to provide leadership, information, and education leading to the enhancement of health and quality of life through the suppression of mosquitoes and other vector transmitted diseases and the reduction of annoyance levels caused by mosquitoes and other vectors and pests of public health importance.

The membership includes, but is not limited to: students, researchers, professors, regulators, mosquito control district superintendents, workers, commissioners, trustees and many others.  Typically, states that have  significant mosquito problems have 50 – 100 members, with some states having in excess of 150 members.  The total budgets for mosquito control in the United States exceed $450,000,000.00

The total 2014 membership is over 1700, including over 200 international members in 80 countries.  An annual conference is held in various parts of the United States every spring. Typically 800 to 1,000 delegates worldwide attend the conference to share the results of scientific and operational studies.

Each year the week that includes June 26, Mosquito Control Awareness Week, is celebrated across the country to educate the public about mosquitoes, mosquito-borne diseases and to demonstrate the importance of mosquito control, especially to children and young adults.

Many members conduct mosquito training courses and educational activities for schools and other organizations throughout the United States.

The AMCA publishes The Journal of the American Mosquito Control Association quarterly. This refereed journal is the premier publication reporting research for mosquito control in the world.  Wing Beats is the quarterly operational publication for the AMCA that presents practical information to mosquito control workers.  The AMCA Newsletter is published 6 times per year and brings current news from the various AMCA regions to the membership.  The AMCA Website: http://www.mosquito.org or www.mosquito.org serves to educate the public and communicate with the membership.”

Note: The One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono Team: Laura H. Kahn, MD, MPH, MPP ▪ Bruce Kaplan, DVM ▪ Thomas P. Monath, MD ▪ Jack Woodall, PhD ▪ Lisa A. Conti, DVM, MPH is delighted to welcome AMCA as a One Health supporter.  Indeed, AMCA is considered an invaluable public health resource operating in the true spirit of One Health, i.e. as a multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary collaborative organization.
