February 2018, Ohio State University (USA): Global One Health initiative's (GOHi) Executive Director and Regional Director at East Africa Events
[Dr.] Wondwossen Gebreyes, Global One Health initiative's (GOHi) executive director, and Getnet Yimer, regional director, attended several events in eastern Africa to build capacity and foster future collaboration in the area. The events Included:
· A regional research and training capacity building workshop in Nairobi that was hosted by the NIH Fogarty International Center and the University of Nairobi and Kenya Medical Research Institute.
· The Global Nutrition Symposium hosted by USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems (LSIL), where leaders from the USAID, LSIL, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, several partner universities and GOHi attended to learn about increasing availability of animal-source foods through greater production and marketing of quality feeds.
· A kick-off event for the Gates Foundation CAGED Project that aims to improve nutrition, food safety and child health.
· A site visit to Haramaya University, a partner of the Gates Foundation CAGED Project
· A strategic planning meeting in GOHi's regional office in Addis Ababa, hosting partners fromTexas A&M, University of Georgia and Cornell University. ...

Such an effort would support research and development to prevent and control animal diseases minimising spill-over and enhancing food security. The possible utility of animal vaccines for preventing public health emergencies was also noted.”

12 February 2018 – World Health Organization (WHO) releases its 2018 list of priority pathogens that have the potential to cause a public health emergency and which have no, or insufficient, countermeasures. WHO calls on the medical community to unite in greater R&D efforts for these 8 diseases to develop treatments and vaccines to help control outbreaks.
