One Health Arkansas
is an initiative that has been primarily led by the veterinary community within the state.
This year’s conference continues the attempt to expand the involvement to include the human health side of the equation (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists) in order to accomplish the objectives of the One Health Initiative. We hope to do this by informing participants on what this initiative is, how to utilize the initiative within your respective profession, and address specifically some One Health issues such as the Human Animal Bond, human health concerns from interacting with animals in various public settings, and tying together animal and human health emergency preparedness.

Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats Workshop - Hosted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Nov. 29-30, 2017
“We want to reach a large audience in hopes of promoting research and analgesic development for companion animals with translational benefit to humans.”
Please consider attending the upcoming Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats Workshop that will be hosted by NIH on Nov. 29-30, 2017. There is no registration cost but everyone does need to register at the website. We want to reach a large audience in hopes of promoting research and analgesic development for companion animals with translational benefit to humans.
Despite advances, chronic pain is one of the most poorly understood and under treated medical problems facing veterinary medicine today. One of the most frustrating aspects of developing therapeutics for treating chronic pain in veterinary medicine is the lack of validated methods to measure chronic pain in different species and diseases. Similarly, translational success has often been lacking when taking analgesics from animal models to human clinical trials. Numerous reviews have highlighted a lack of translation of basic research into new approved therapeutics for treating persistent pain in humans. The use of spontaneous painful disease in companion animals is one of the changes that could help improve translation of basic science to new therapeutics to act as a bridge between preclinical and clinical studies. The ultimate goal is to reduce failure rates in human clinical trials with resultant new therapeutics for humans and animals. For this bridge to work, we need valid outcome measures in animal spontaneous disease conditions and opportunities to share and promote knowledge.
We are hoping this NIH workshop will bring research, regulatory, academia, and industry together from the veterinary and human arena to tackle these challenges.
Please see the brochure http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/publications/Pain%20in%20Animals%20Workshop.pdf and the www.PAW2017.com website. Please help us spread the word by sharing the brochure and website with your colleagues. Thank you very much!

Conference charts one-health approach to addressing obesity in pets, people
By Katie Burns
Posted July 12, 2017

Walking with dogs can provide people with motivation for physical activity, according to speakers and delegates at the recent conference "Preventing Obesity in People and their Pets: A One Health Approach."
A recent conference charted a one-health approach to addressing obesity in pets and people, and a consensus statement reflecting the key outcomes and recommendations from the meeting appeared in the May 2017 issue of the Journal of Comparative Pathology.
The One Health Committee of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hosted "Preventing Obesity in People and their Pets: A One Health Approach" on Nov. 10-11, 2016, in Atlanta. The conference paired speakers from human and veterinary medicine to discuss obesity in humans and companion animals. ...

Europe announces new action plan on AMR |

Europe announces new action plan on AMR

“European officials today released a new action plan on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) that builds on efforts to address the emergence and spread of drug-resistant pathogens in humans, animals, and the environment.
The plan, released by the European Commission, the body that devises common policies for the European Union (EU), takes a One Health approach, which recognizes that drug resistance effects not only human health, but also the health of animals and the environment.
The plan aims to establish a comprehensive framework to strengthen EU efforts to reduce the spread of AMR in humans and animals, help individual states strengthen their national AMR policies, promote development of new antibiotics and diagnostics, and establish the EU as a global leader in addressing the AMR threat.
"It's not too late to turn the tide on antimicrobial resistance, but we need to make sure that we act now," Andrea Ammon, MD, MPH, director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), said in a press release. ...”
