For Immediate Release
Drs. John Farrar, Elliot Hersh, and Rosemary Polomano to Receive 2016 One Health Award Recipients honored for interdisciplinary pain science and practice course for nursing, dental, and medical students at the University of Pennsylvania
[October 25, 2016; Philadelphia, PA (USA)] – [physician] Dr. John T. Farrar [MD, PhD], of the Perelman School of Medicine; [dentist] Dr. Elliot V. Hersh [DMD, PhD], of the School of Dental Medicine; and [nurse] Dr. Rosemary Polomano [RN, PhD], of the School of Nursing Science at the University of Pennsylvania have been named the 2016 recipients of Penn’s One Health Award, recognizing their exemplary contributions to expanding interdisciplinary collaboration and improving health care for the benefit of humans, animals, and the environment. The One Health Award was established in 2013 by the deans of the four health schools at Penn—the Perelman School of Medicine (Penn Medicine), the School of Nursing Science (Penn Nursing), the School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine), and the School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet).
The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Penn Vet’s Hill Pavilion (380 S. University Ave., Philadelphia), as part of the 2016 Microbiome Symposium.
Together, Farrar, Hersh, and Polomano lead an interdisciplinary course on pain science and practice for nursing, dental, and medical students at Penn. This interdisciplinary course stems from the trio’s work as co-principal investigators on the NIH-funded Penn Center for Excellence in Pain Education (CoEPE) grant, one of only 12 such centers in the nation. Since January 2013, the comprehensive and innovative academic pain course has been an interschool and inter-institutional draw for students, clinicians, and international colleagues, attracting more than 400 students. More than 20 Penn pain scientists and clinicians are currently engaged in teaching the course, utilizing various modalities including lectures, interactive case presentations, and simulations. The course helps to train the next generation of interprofessional healthcare providers in pain care and pain management who are also learning to develop strategies to reduce the opioid misuse, abuse, and addiction associated with the treatment of pain.
“It is a great privilege to recognize extraordinary collaborations throughout the University that exemplify the One Health initiative,” said *Joan C. Hendricks, VMD, PhD, the Gilbert S. Kahn Dean of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. “The pain science and practice course led by Drs. Farrar, Hersh, and Polomano is a superb example of interdisciplinary education at Penn that serves as a model across the globe. We are also very proud that Dr. Dorothy Cimino Brown’s research on objective pain measurements in animals has been conducted in collaboration with Dr. Farrar. Through this program, students in health professions are better equipped to integrate models of interprofessional practice to improve patient care.”
Dr. John T. Farrar, MD, PhD, is a neurologist and an associate professor of epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at Penn Medicine. His research interests are focused on the studies of pain and symptom management with a special focus on measurement, analysis, and interpretation methodology.
“I have always believed that medical care, as with medical science, is best accomplished by the collaboration of caring individuals across all of the biological sciences,” said Farrar. “I am proud to have been a part of that process and am truly honored to have been selected for this award in the company of my two esteemed colleagues and friends for many years.”
Dr. Elliot V. Hersh, DMD, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery/Pharmacology at Penn Dental Medicine. His clinical research program plays a key role in developing and carrying out FDA-pivotal clinical trials. His primary research endeavors focus on the areas of novel local anesthetic drugs and alternatives to opioids in the management of acute postoperative pain.
“I am extremely honored to not only receive this prestigious award, but to also work closely with Drs. Farrar and Polomano,” said Hersh. “Dr. Farrar introduced me to brain imaging and Dr. Polomano is the absolute juggernaut of the educational aspect of our course.”
Dr. Rosemary Polomano, RN, PhD, is a professor of pain practice at Penn Nursing. Her research is dedicated to advancing the science of understanding and treating pain, including the mechanisms of peripheral neuropathy, ways to measure pain, and ways to help patients communicate about their pain.
“The ability to leverage discipline-specific perspectives in pain education has enriched our student's learning,” said Polomano. “Our health profession students have opportunities to learn from our exceptional and dedicated Penn pain faculty the latest science guiding pain care.”

Extraordinary Scientist, Admired One Health Supporter-Activist-Leader Dies
London, U.K., October 24, 2016 — Jack Woodall, PhD (John Payne Woodall) 1935 – 2016, a viral epidemiologist, scientist and visiting Professor and Director (retd.) Nucleus for the Investigation of Emerging Infectious Diseases at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry, Center for Health Sciences, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has died after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dr. Woodall was a co-founder and associate editor of ProMED-mail, the outbreak early warning system online of the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. ProMED-mail was one of Dr. Woodall’s primary passions since its inception. He became the contents manager/editor of the ProMED-mail section in the One Health Initiative website http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/promed.php in February 2009 and retired from that endeavor in May 2016. Jack was an integral member of the One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono team comprised of Laura H. Kahn, MD, MPH, MPP, Bruce Kaplan, DVM, Thomas P. Monath, MD and Lisa A. Conti, DVM, MPH. Promotion and support of One Health with the goal of eventual implementation was of great importance to our esteemed colleague, Dr. Jack Woodall.
Other posts that Dr. Woodall held included the Biological Weapons Working Group of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, Washington DC (USA) since 2004, the Editorial Advisory Board of The Scientist magazine since 2007, and the Editorial Advisory Board, Journal of Medical Chemical, Biological & Radiological Defense since 2008. In addition, he was on the Scientific Advisory Board, Sabin Vaccine Institute, Washington DC from 2004 – 2006. He has served on the American Committee on Arthropod-Borne Viruses, American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) and as Web Site Editor of the ASTMH from 2002 – 2008.
Dr. Woodall earned his PhD in virology/entomology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He was subsequently Senior Scientist for Her Majesty’s Overseas Research Service, East African Virus Research Institute, Entebbe, Uganda; a staff member of The Rockefeller Foundation, New York, NY (USA); Director, Belem Virus Laboratory, Belem, Para, Brazil; Research Fellow, Yale Arbovirus Research Unit, Yale University, New Haven CT (USA); Head, Arbovirus Laboratory, New York State Health Dept., Albany NY, (USA); Staff member, US Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), (USA); Director, San Juan Laboratories, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Scientist with the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland; and Director, Arbovirus Laboratory, New York State Health Dept., Albany, NY, (USA). Dr. Woodall published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Woodall was an internationally recognized public health authority, educator and One Health leader. Serving as a pro bono contents manager of the ProMED-mail page of the One Health Initiative website, he was an active participant of the autonomous pro bono One Health team of Drs. Kahn, Kaplan, Monath and Conti. He traveled frequently by invitation to promote the online reporting of emerging disease outbreaks and One Health.
The One Health Initiative team has suffered a profound and irreplaceable loss with the death of our dear friend and colleague, Jack Woodall. He collaborated brilliantly and freely on every major One Health issue since joining the OHI team in 2009. Numerous email communications were exchanged each week and frequently on a daily basis between the five of us. Laura, Bruce, Tom and Lisa depended a great deal on Jack’s experience and wise insights about a variety of topics. Our hearts go out to his wife Mary and all family members. The national and international One Health community has lost an invaluable, dedicated and trusted advocate with the passing of Jack Woodall. He shall be sorely missed and yet remembered fondly and affectionately.

| Prominent Israeli Physician Accepts Country Ambassador Role in Global ‘One Health Day’ Plans - Tuesday, October 18, 2016 |
Prominent Israeli Physician Accepts Country Ambassador Role in Global ‘One Health Day’ Plans
Prof. Itamar Grotto, MD, MPH, PhD, https://apha.confex.com/apha/141am/webprogram/Person276636.html, a physician and recently appointed associate Director General of the State of Israel’s Ministry of Health www.health.gov.il accepted serving as Israel’s “One Health Day” Country Ambassador on October 16, 2016. A longstanding One Health supporter/advocate, Dr. Grotto and several physician and veterinarian colleagues from Israel collaborated to write an important One Health article http://www.izs.it/vet_italiana/2009/45_1/45.pdf in the landmark 2009 MONOGRAPH in Veterinaria Italiana "One Health - One Medicine": linking human, animal and environmental health http://www.izs.it/vet_italiana/2009/45_1/45_1.htm.
Notably, the first ‘One Health’ Conference held in Israel was on February 4, 2016 https://goo.gl/nzcUnp. “Israel just had its first One Health conference in a hospital!” The one day event took place at the Tel-Aviv Medical Center, Tel Aviv, and was supported by the Israeli Ministry of Health (MOH) http://www.health.gov.il/english/Pages/HomePage.aspx.
“Serving as a One Health Day Country Ambassador simply means we have 'connected' with a significant, knowledgeable and respected health leader representative from that particular country who is supportive of the One Health concept and willing to help promote it via a One Health Day https://www.onehealthcommission.org/en/eventscalendar/one_health_day/”, said veterinarian and planning committee leader of the first annual Global One Health Day, Dr. Cheryl Stroud [DVM, PhD], Executive Director of the One Health Commission (OHC). The OHC has been collaborating co-equally with the One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono Team www.onehealthinitiative.com and the One Health Platform Foundation http://onehealthplatform.com/ to help develop, plan, coordinate and promote the One Health concept worldwide via this One Health Day project.
Dr. Stroud elaborates further, “Ambassadors work within their country networks to encourage creation of One Health Day events by colleagues, students, individuals, government agencies. It is an informal relationship, no contracts. In this instance, inquiries about One Health and One Health Day from within Israel may potentially come to Dr. Grotto for encouragement and he might connect them with the One Health Day Regional Spokesperson for the Middle East, physician Dr. Muhammad Wasif Alam [MD, MSPH], http://worldaviationsafety.com/speaker/dr-muhammad-wasif-alam/, Director of Public Health & Safety at Dubai Health Authority.” Stroud says, “We, the planning committee, broke the globe into 6 regions https://www.onehealthcommission.org/en/eventscalendar/one_health_day/regional_points_of_contact/.”
The network is composed of One Health advocates that are being encouraged to encourage others. In this whole process, the One Health concept is being discussed and shared. This One Health Day Country Ambassador 'connection' is very new. Consequently, the OHC’s One Health Day website has not yet created a place for this listing. The planning committee stresses that this is just the first annual One Health Day but they are already starting to talk about next year.

A potential large scale “One Health in Action” ... another dynamic case for implementing One Health!
Vaccines against diseases transmitted from animals to humans: A one health paradigm
“This review focuses on the immunization of animals as a means of preventing human diseases (zoonoses). …”
In simple terms, the idea is to develop vaccines that protect domestic animals and wildlife thereby establishing effective barriers against human infections. Developing animal vaccines are less expensive and are less strictly regulated than are those for humans. Hopefully a common sense One Health approach can go forward.

Important One Health Publication…
International Journal of Vaccines and Vaccination
“Reservoir-Targeted Vaccines as a One Health Path to Prevent Zoonotic Disease”
Permission to post on One Health Initiative website October 12, 2016 granted by:
Steve Zatechka, PhD, MBA, Chief Operating Officer, US Biologic, Inc, 20 Dudley, Suite 900, Memphis, TN 38103, USA, Tel: 901-755-6868 E-mail steve.zatechka@usbiologic.com
Abstract
“Reservoir-targeted vaccines (RTVs) are emerging as an effective means by which to control the spread of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Delivered as an orally-administered antigen, the biologistics involved in the distribution of RTVs are administered as part of a platform solution to address the growing risk from zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. Specific performance measures must therefore be considered in the stable presentation of antigen of a potency to elicit mucosal immunity and control disease transmission. Concomitantly, several criteria are also required in order to administer a commercially feasible and scalable safe and efficacious vaccine into field conditions, for oral consumption. Such a solution further aligns with the One Health Initiative. As an exemplary case study, an RTV addressing the epidemic of Lyme disease is presented.”
