One Health Commission (USA) partners with the Global Alliance for Rabies Control's ‘End Rabies Now’ campaign - Thursday, September 08, 2016

One Health Commission (USA) partners with the Global Alliance for Rabies Control's ‘End Rabies Now’ campaign

“Rabies is 100% preventable. In the U.S. and many European countries, a dog bite rarely leads to death. But in many countries, even a superficial dog bite or scratch can lead to a disease that is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms manifest.

Rabies is one of the world’s oldest diseases, but remains a daily threat to millions around the world.

It doesn’t have to be this way. …

Historic Physician Epidemiology Leader and One Health Advocate Dies - D. A. Henderson, MD, MPH - Sunday, August 21, 2016

Historic Physician Epidemiology Leader and One Health Advocate Dies

D. A. Henderson, MD, MPH https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Henderson, the great American physician who directed the eradication of small pox in the 20th century and a strong supporter/advocate of the One Health concept, died August 19, 2016.

Dr. Henderson served on the One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono team’s (OHI) Advisory Board http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/advBoard.php.  Early in the development of the OHI’s campaign to promote the One Health approach to worldwide public health and clinical health (comparative medicine), Henderson expressed strong support and encouragement.

April 22, 2007 Dr. D. A. Henderson, legendary leader of the worldwide smallpox eradication program said [see http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/publications/One%20Health%20Supporter%20Endorsements.pdf]:

“I thank you for your email and congratulate you and your colleagues in promoting the "One Medicine" concept [now generally referred to as One Health]. It is an initiative that is long overdue but, at the same time, I don't personally identify dramatic solutions that are apt to change the landscape in the short term. I would note that when one has had the good fortune to have enjoyed the tutelage of *Jim Steele during my tenure at CDC and periodically ever since, as a friend, the one medicine concept becomes well engrained. Indeed, when I came to Hopkins as Dean in 1977, I cast about to determine how we might link up with a veterinary school for research and educational purposes. Unfortunately, geography was simply too great a hurdle to overcome.

Bottom line: I would be more than happy to do whatever I could in support of your efforts.”

2016 National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) Antibiotics Symposium Emphasis on Working Together Across Animal and Human Health

Colorado Springs, Colo. The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) will once again host a unique gathering focused on a collaborative and continued dialogue about antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance. Not about one point of view, the 2016 NIAA hosted Antibiotics Symposium provides a setting for a thoughtful exchange of ideas for the betterment of animal and human health.

The Symposium entitled, Antibiotic Use – Working Together for Better Solutions, takes place November 1-3, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, Va.

All sectors of the animal food production and human/public health industries will come together around this, one of the most important topics in animal and human health today. The sixth Symposium hosted by NIAA and its partners, NIAA continues to develop the dialog on antimicrobial resistance through collaboration and cross-industry discussion.

Presenters will be from organizations such as the CDC, FDA, and USDA, along with industry leaders, retailers, processors, producers, and representatives from both human and public health. To move forward, animal agriculture must outline what appropriate use of antibiotics really means, and identify the core elements of stewardship.

Building trust, developing tools and deploying strategies will take all of us Working Together.

For more information or to register online go animalagriculture.org/2016-Antibiotics-Symposium or contact the NIAA by calling 719-538-8843 or email niaa@animalagriculture.org.

The National Institute for Animal Agriculture provides a forum for building consensus and advancing proactive solutions for animal agriculture—the aquaculture, beef, dairy, equine, goats, poultry, sheep and swine industries—and provides continuing education and communication linkages for animal agriculture professionals. NIAA is dedicated to programs which work towards the eradication of disease which pose risk to the health of animals, wildlife and humans; which promote a safe and wholesome food supply for our nation and abroad; and which promote best practices in environmental stewardship, animal health and well-being. NIAA members represent all facets of animal agriculture.

New President of American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Endorses One Health - August 10, 2016 - Thursday, August 11, 2016

New President of American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Endorses One Health

August 10, 2016...

“The concept of One Health has been described for millennia – from Hippocrates’ writings circa 400 B.C. to the AVMA website you can read today. Even with the passage of thousands of years, though, certain One Health principles remain constant: As human populations expand geographically, contact between human and domestic and wild animal habitats increases, introducing the risk of exposure of all three populations to new viruses, bacteria and other disease-causing pathogens. One Health, however, addresses not only concerns about diseases that can be communicated between people and animals, but also lifestyle issues (e.g., diet, exercise, impacts of different types of human-animal relationships) and environmental exposures that may affect both. And, as people and animals continue to rely on planet Earth for their sustenance and survival, the impact we have on our environment also increases along the way. This interconnection is why the practice of One Health is so critically important for each of us, particularly those in the medical and public health fields. The AVMA remains engaged in and an advocate for One Health. That cannot change. As veterinarians, we recognize and uphold our duty to promote the health of all species and the varied places in which they live. As an association, the AVMA is committed to helping advance the awareness and understanding of the interdependency of the health of humans and animals and the environments we share. We are committed to One Health.”

Dr. Thomas F. Meyer [MS, DVM]

2016-2017 AVMA President
