| Another Prominent One Health Leader Becomes President of American Veterinary Epidemiology Society (AVES) - Monday, April 18, 2016 |
Another Prominent One Health Leader Becomes President of American Veterinary Epidemiology Society (AVES)
Craig N. Carter [DVM, PhD] Named President of American Veterinary Epidemiology Society
Reprinted primarily from Coldstream Research Campus - University of Kentucky (USA) http://www.uky.edu/coldstream/News/craig-carter-named-president-american-veterinary-epidemiology-society
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 11, 2016) —*[Dr.] Craig N. Carter, a veterinarian director and professor of epidemiology at the University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL), recently took the helm of the American Veterinary Epidemiology Society (AVES) as president for a five-year term. AVES was founded by [Dr.] James H. Steele [DVM, MPH] in 1964 to recognize global leaders in infectious disease epidemiology and public health and to foster research to combat infectious diseases in both animals and humans. The society has recognized more than 70 world-renowned scientists through awarding the K.F. Meyer/James H. Steele Gold Headed Cane Award, which Carter received in 2011, primarily for his work on zoonotic diseases. [Note: Dr. James H. Steele is a recognized 20th and early 21st century Public Health-One Health leader/advocate http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/news.php?query=james+h.+steele%2C+dvm%2C+mph]
[Notably, a co-founder of the One Health Initiative team, physician Dr. Tom Monath [MD], was awarded the prestigious Gold Headed Cane award last year in July of 2015 http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/news.php?query=Extraordinary+One+Health+Leader+Awarded+Gold+Headed+Cane+%28USA%29%3A+an+internationally+recognized+physician+virologist+and+vaccine+developer+-+July+13%2C+2015+. In addition, Dr. Cheryl Stroud [DVM, PhD], a veterinarian and Executive Director of the U.S. One Health Commission https://www.onehealthcommission.org/documents/filelibrary/leadership/Stroud_Bio_63014__E6E65C076BD78.pdf was awarded an Honorary Diploma. Dr. Carter will be presenting this year’s 2016 Gold Headed Cane awards and the coveted AVES Honorary diplomas at the August 5-9 American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) convention in San Antonio, Texas.]
“I consider it such a great honor and privilege to serve as the president of the American Veterinary Epidemiology Society for the next five years," said Carter. "Since leaving my ambulatory practice in Texas, I have worked as an epidemiologist in service, research and teaching roles in the university, military and international consulting environments for over thirty years. Dr. Jim Steele — founder of the AVES and the CDC division of epidemiology — was my graduate professor, mentor and dear friend for many years until his death at 100 years young in 2013." [Dr. Carter is the primary James H. Steele biographer http://www.amazon.com/One-Man-Medicine-Health-Steele/dp/1439240043]. Carter was recruited from Texas A&M University to the UK College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment in 2005 to build an epidemiology program to provide for the early detection of animal disease outbreaks such as Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome. In 2007, he was appointed to his current position at UKVDL where he oversees lab operations, conducts research and works with his graduate students. One of Carter’s goals for the AVES is to attract more bright students into careers in epidemiology. Sponsored by Hartz Mountain Corporation, the AVES hosts its annual meeting each year as part of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) meeting. The 2016 meeting will be held in July, in San Antonio, Texas. A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps will also be held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio in conjunction with the AVMA meeting. Carter’s military career spanned from 1967-2008, retiring as a full colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Veterinary Corps. Carter said he has thoroughly enjoyed his many years as a faculty member at UK. "Now nearing the end of my career, I delight in this opportunity to give something back to the AVES and to a scientific discipline that has been so good to me and the world.”

Interesting Influenza Historical perspective ...

Almost 100 years have passed since Rose Cleveland (and over fifty-million other humans) died from the paradigm One Health Disease: "Swine flu", during January to April 2016, an alphabet-soup of "swine flu" and "bird flu" have continued to affect birds and / or humans, on all continents: H1N1, H5N1, H5N2, H7N9, H5N6, H7N8. In 2015, the list also included H5N2, H5N3, H5N7, H7N3 and H7N7.
Rose Cleveland - sister of President Grover Cleveland who acted as "first lady" to her bachelor brother - was one of approximately 150 famous people that perished in the "Spanish flu" pandemic of 1918 to 1920. Best known at the time were Francisco Rodrigues Alves (Brazilian President Elect) and Louis Botha (President of South Africa).
No less than ten stars of the Silent Movie era are known to have died during the pandemic.
True Boardman – appeared in 137 films; William Courtleigh, Jr.; Dark Cloud (Elijah Tahemont) – Canadian Indian, appeared in 34 movies; Myrtle Gonzalez – Hollywood's first Hispanic movie star; Shelly Hull – Brother of actor Henry Hull; Joseph Kaufman; Vera Kholodnaya – The first Russian star of Silent Movies; Julian L'Estrange; Harold A. Lockwood; Wayland Trask, Jr. – Starred in several Mack Sennett comedies
Following the Spanish flu of 1918 to 1920, influenza has continued to contribute to [or be associated with] the deaths of famous people: Pope John Paul, II; Juan Peron (Argentina), Francesco Nitti and Paolo Boselli (Italy); performers Angela Baddeley, Lillie Langtree, Tallulah Bankhead, Jean Harlow and Trevor Howard; baseball legends Dick Bertell and Hack Wilson; movie directors Jules Dassin and Luchino Visconti; and philosopher Bertrand Russell. In fact, two additional Silent Movie stars managed to join my famous-flu-deaths list after the Spanish flu had already passed: Edward J. Connelly (1928) and Henry B. Walthall (1936).
These lists are abstracted from a hobby which I maintain on-line at www.VIPatients.com The site is free and interactive – users can explore the medical file of a specific VIP; or generate lists by profession, disease, year … or any combination.
Note: This is the second in a series. The famous people mentioned by Dr. Berger were associated with Influenza outbreaks but their deaths were not necessarily caused by it. See his first article on the One Health Initiative website at http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/news.php?query=%22Fame+and+Zoonosis%22+by+physician%2C+Dr.+Steve+A.+Berger+.
*Dr. Berger, a physician, was trained in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, is currently affiliated with the Tel Aviv Medical Center as Director of Geographic Medicine and is a One Health Supporter/Advocate http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/supporters.php.

Re: US BIOLOGIC endorsement of the One Health Initiative
http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/publications/US%20BIOLOGIC%20-%20One%20Health%20Technology%20Platform%204%204%202016.pdf
According to the CDC (2016), “Scientists estimate that more than 6 out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are spread from animals." While human-focused diagnostic, preventative, and treatment innovations will remain critical tools in protecting human health, special focus also must be paid to the animals with which humans interact.
The One Health movement understands the interconnection between human and animal, and so its tenants of focusing on animal health to improve human health bear relevance to all global efforts to reduce disease, and improve and save human lives.
US BIOLOGIC has developed a unique One Health solution: an oral-delivery platform that can target “disease reservoirs” such as the white-footed mice known to be the primary carrier for Lyme Borrelia. This solution allows for cost-efficient application of the vaccine in a wildlife setting, thus changing the environmental role of the mouse from disease reservoir to being an integral part of the Point of Disease Prevention cycle.
“Implementation of such a long-term public health measure could substantially reduce the risk of human exposure to Lyme disease” (Richer LM, et al. Reservoir targeted vaccine against Borrelia burgdorferi: A new strategy to prevent Lyme disease transmission. Journal of Infectious Disease. 2014; 209: 1972-1980).
Toward that end, US BIOLOGIC is pleased to endorse the One Health Initiative in its many forms, and we look forward to growing together, creating groundbreaking technologies that may improve animal and human health all over the world.
Sincerely,
Mason Kauffman
President & CEO
