Landmark Global Health/One Health Book Author Speaks out Again...

On January 4, 2016, George R. Lueddeke, PhD - Consultant Education Advisor in Higher & Medical Education, http://www.onehealthinitiative.com/publications/221215%20GL%20Short%20Bio.pdf and author of “Global Population Health and Well-Being in the 21st Century: Toward New Paradigms, Policy, and Practice” (copyright 2016) wrote to the One Health Initiative team/website:

“The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has certainly raised awareness about global priorities from 2016 - 2030 and beyond. But these need to be continually reinforced at all global and national societal levels. The U.S. President's Proclamation in April 2015 https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/04/06/presidential-proclamation-national-public-health-week-2015 for the American Public Health Association (APHA) is noteworthy especially its emphasis on leaving "our children a safer, healthier, more prosperous world," recognising that "America's public health is deeply tied to the health of our environment," and its aim to shift "the focus of our country's health care system from sickness and disease to wellness and prevention." All of these are of course inherent in the One Health mission or philosophy.

One of my hopes for the book is that it will be perceived at least as one of the useful catalysts for stimulating discussion in  various public learning environments - formal and informal- and thereby helping to achieve some of the goals outlined by policy-makers etc...”

Dr. Lueddeke previously said [December 23, 2015], “—“While writing the book and now, ‘One World, One Health’ is the only plausible way forward for our planet and people...”.

Federation of European Microbiogical Societies (FEMS) Endorses One Health - Thursday, December 10, 2015

Federation of European Microbiogical Societies (FEMS) Endorses One Health

“The Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) strongly supports the One Health Initiative (OHI) and the call for increased collaboration between the human and veterinary medical communities. Many of our members look forward to seeing more interactions and partnerships between physicians, veterinarians and scientific researchers.  Such collaboration could help find responses to serious societal challenges, such as emerging infectious diseases, pandemics and the transmission of Antimicrobial Resistance. Also, it is crucial for our health and the health of the planet to build a better understanding around the role and fate of microbes and viruses in the biotic and abiotic environment. OHI can show the way to a healthy future!”

U.S. Embassy Hosts “One Health” Master Class Workshop for Armenian Medical, Scientific Experts

December 2, 2015

"Coming together, we are stronger." That was the message during a One Health master class, organized by the U.S. government held in Yerevan on December 1 and 2, 2015.

The two-day workshop, hosted by experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), brought together officials from Armenian medical and scientific fields to discuss the “One Health” approach in combatting outbreaks of dangerous illness such as avian flu or anthrax.

“Any one nation can be the start of an outbreak or the defense against an outbreak. It is only by looking globally, can we pro-actively address such concerns. And look globally is what the U.S. experts joining us here today do,” said Clark Price, Deputy Chief of Mission from the U.S. Embassy in Armenia, as he opened the session. “Human health, animal health, and ecosystem health are inextricably linked. And with this One Health approach, we are all working together to promote, improve, and defend the health and well-being of all by enhancing cooperation and collaboration between physicians, veterinarians and other scientific health and environmental professionals.”

Participating in the two-day workshop wererepresentatives from the Armenian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Nature Protection, and Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations. Working with U.S. peers, they explored ways to increase their ability to prevent, detect, and respond to diseases that affect both humans and animals. The key to preventing such outbreaks is closer coordination and collaboration amongst the various ministries. Along with making humans and animals ill, these diseases can also impact food security and safety.

The CDC and DTRA work with partner countries around the globe to enhance disease surveillance systems allowing for more efficient detection and response.

“These U.S. experts are true partners with countries like Armenia, working around the globe to enhance surveillance systems that identify potential disease outbreaks, enabling more efficient response from public health officials,” DCM Price said. “An important part of this effort is building capacity through mentorship and training. And that is what today is all about.”
