US veterinary hospital faces rare antibiotic-resistant E coli http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2020/01/us-veterinary-hospital-faces-rare-antibiotic-resistant-e-coli
"On Apr 1, 2019, Shelley Rankin, PhD, the chief of clinical microbiology at the University of ... "It's the quintessential One Health problem," she said.
"... A One Health conundrum
The report on the outbreak, which appeared this week in Emerging Infectious Diseases, raises a lot of questions. Although the number of dogs and cats affected was small—14 over several months—and it's still unclear whether they were infected with the pathogen or colonized, Rankin said what remains unknown is how the animals acquired NDM-5–producing E coli, where these resistance genes are lurking, and how easily they can be transmitted between animals and humans. ...
Rankin said that while seeing a CRE outbreak in veterinary medicine did not come as a surprise, especially at a large veterinary hospital, she and her colleagues were not prepared for it, and she doesn't think the profession is prepared for it. She's hoping that getting the word out about the outbreak, and having discussions with public health agencies, human medical colleagues, and experts in environmental monitoring, will result in some guidance for veterinarians.
"It's a really good One Health opportunity," she said. "It's a great opportunity to bring everyone together."

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (USA)— Penn State’s Applied Biological and Biosecurity Research Laboratory (ABRL), together with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the United States Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Biological Threat Reduction Program, recently worked with India’s Department of Biotechnology within the Ministry of Science and Technology to help the Indian government launch its complex and ambitious One Health Initiative at the One Health India Conference 2019, a two-day gathering held Feb. 18-19 in New Delhi.
India’s One Health Initiative is an intersectoral approach to tackling the most urgent health threats in the region, with a focus on low and middle-income countries across south and southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. ... |

“...The huge problem of today can only be managed by the united effort of professionals from various backgrounds. In other terms, a One Health approach has to be implemented globally to be able to reach palpable results. ...”
“...These three aspects of the OneHealth approach should be urgently addressed not only directly but also indirectly. The universities have a huge role in incorporating this perspective into their curriculums to make sure that the future generation can manage AMR efficiently. Additionally, research institutes should promote research on ways to manage AMR in a OneHealth approach as a supplement to their constant pursuit of new antibiotics (6). All of this however should be supported by governments around the world by following WHO’s recommendations for antibiotic use, by implementing vaccination programs, raising awareness on proper hygiene and assisting all concerned stakeholders in their war against AMR (7).
Let us join hands in our battle against antimicrobial resistance and fight for a safer tomorrow.”
