One Health Initiative team (OHI), One Health Commission (OHC) and 68 other Health Oriented Organizations sign Supporting Letter RE: “Pandemic and All-Hazards & Advancing Innovation Act (PAHPAI, H.R. 269)” to U.S. Congressional Leadership Today
March 22, 2019
"On behalf of the undersigned organizations, representing public health, healthcare providers, emergency managers, environmental health, biotechnology innovators, and researchers, we are again writing to encourage you to advance the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness & Advancing Innovation Act (PAHPAI, H.R. 269), which overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives in January. A similar version passed the Senate Health Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) Committee last year. The HELP and Energy & Commerce Committees have made tremendous, bipartisan progress on this important legislation, and it would be a setback for our national health security to further delay reauthorization. The disaster relief package being considered by Congress would be a logical vehicle for PAHPAI. ... "

Implementation of One Health in undergraduate education
Working together from curricula to practice
One Health is a concept that recognises interlinks between human health, animal health and the environment. The value of the One Health holistic approach is undisputed when it comes to tackling different challenges to public and animal health.
Academics, students, professionals and policy makers were engaged in lively discussions about One Health in Paris on 5 December 2018. Participants exchanged their views about the value and necessity for working together on a common understanding of the One Health concept and on promoting interdisciplinary collaboration starting from universities.
The European associations representing medical doctors, dentists, veterinarians and their students – among the Council of European Dentists – remain committed partners for future actions to be undertaken towards the implementation of the One Health approach in education and practice and call on academics and policy makers at national and European level:
• to work on the development of a clear definition to ensure a common understanding of the One Health concept;
• to foster exchanges between medical, dental and veterinary schools under the One Health approach;
• to work together on One Health Competences;
• to support and ensure the continuation of this open debate;
• to support the further investigation of implementation of One Health interdisciplinary education of doctors, dentists and veterinarians.

The Collaboration Between Human and Animal Medicine
Written by Carol Petersen, RPh CNP – Pet Health Pharmacy - Feb 28, 2019
The idea of a “One Health” organization started with the AVMA, the American Veterinary Medical Association, back in 2006 who called together a multi-discipline task force to further develop the idea.
They called together representatives from many health professions to discuss the possibilities of blending and collaborating information, solutions and treatments in order to improve animal and human health and the environment. The information and ideas and final presentation they gathered can be found at www.onehealthinitiative.com.
The “One Health” movement calls for active collaboration between the professionals caring for animals and the professionals caring for humans. ...

Dear Sir
Health impacts of environmental exposures, such as poor air quality and emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, contribute to an estimated 25% of the global disease burden. As physician-scientists, we stress that medical education programs should incorporate key One Health competency domains, connecting human, animal, and environmental health (Frankson et al. 2016 Frankson R, Hueston W, Christian K, Olson D, Lee M, Valeri L, Hyatt R, Annelli J, Rubin C. 2016. One Health core competency domains. Front Public Health. 4:192.[Crossref], [PubMed], [Web of Science ®], , [Google Scholar]), into didactic coursework and clinical training, preparing the future workforce to respond appropriately to global health challenges. ... Collaboration between human and veterinary medicine as a tool to solve public health problems
https://doi.org/10.1016/S2542-5196(18)30250-X
“The implementation of an effective collaboration between human and veterinary medicine, environmental protection, and public health is not a fully achieved goal, although several examples of integrated approaches have been documented in Europe. The concept of one world, one health has recently appeared, indicating that the world has suddenly woken up to the link between animal diseases, public health, and the environment. The need for collaboration between the human, animal, and environmental health sectors is due to the increase in emerging human infectious diseases with a zoonotic origin and in the resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobial drugs.1 The main fields in which this new concept of collaboration has been applied are zoonosis and zooprophylaxis, vaccines, and antibiotic resistance, via the establishment of networks of professionals in the One Health area. The historical background of One Health laid the foundations for the realisation of concrete interventions or future perspectives of collaboration between human, veterinarian, and environmental institutions. …”
