The World Health Organization commemorated the 40th anniversary of smallpox eradication today, recognizing the historic moment on 9 December 1979 when the end of smallpox was confirmed to have been eradicated. Five months later, in May 1980, the 33rd World Health Assembly issued its official declaration that ‘the world and all its peoples have won freedom from smallpox’. ...

I thank you for your email and congratulate you and your colleagues in promoting the "One Medicine" concept. It is an initiative that is long overdue but, at the same time, I don't personally identify dramatic solutions that are apt to change the landscape in the short term. I would note that when one has had the good fortune to have enjoyed the tutelage of Jim Steele during my tenure at CDC and periodically ever since, as a friend, the one medicine concept becomes well engrained. Indeed, when I came to Hopkins as Dean in 1977, I cast about to determine how we might link up with a veterinary school for research and educational purposes. Unfortunately, geography was simply too great a hurdle to overcome.
Bottom line: I would be more than happy to do whatever I could in support of your efforts. |

11 December, 2019 | Abuja – NIGERIA LAUNCHES ONE HEALTH STRATEGIC PLAN
Nigeria has launched a national One Health strategic plan that integrates human, animal and environmental health management for improved health security. The plan which was jointly developed by the Federal Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), and Environment as well as their agencies, reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to strengthen a multi-sectoral collaboration for health security. This plan will be implemented over a five-year period (2018 - 2023).
The health of humans and animals are interlinked with the environment. Majority of infectious diseases that affect human health are zoonotic i.e. originate from animals, and occur at the human-animal-environment interface. Nigeria continues to experience annual outbreaks of zoonotic diseases including Lassa fever, monkeypox and yellow fever.
The new One Health strategic plan launched in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of State for Health, outlines the country’s plan to strengthen the prevention, detection and response to infectious diseases that affect humans, animals and the environment. The plan recognises the interconnectedness of the health of people to the health of animals and the environment, and offers a collaborative, multi-sectoral and transdisciplinary approach for zoonotic diseases.
To improve the country’s implementation of the One Health Strategy, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) pledged their continuous support to Nigeria. Both WHO and OIE supported the organisation of the International Health Regulations and Performance of Veterinary Services (IHR-PVS) bridging workshop in Abuja from 9th to 11th of December 2019. The workshop allowed for the review of capacities across the human and animal health sectors.
Nigeria is the first country in Africa to launch a One Health plan signed by the Ministers of Health Agriculture and Environment. The Honourable Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunnimbe Adeleke Mamora who led the launch of the plan stated, ‘Nigeria has developed a One Health strategic plan to meet its human, animal and environmental health challenges. This approach drives innovations that are important to manage the outbreaks we experience and offers synergy across our various Ministries. We hope that the implementation of this plan in Nigeria can serve as a model for other African countries’.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Dooshima Kwange who represented the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, commended the various activities that are driven through the One Health approach such as the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (NFELTP), multi-sectoral disease technical working groups and joint investigations of zoonotic diseases and other public health events. She stated that the FMARD and its agencies remain fully committed to ensuring the success of the One Health platform by achieving accelerated growth in livestock products for self-sufficiency.
In the same vein, Chika Okpala representing the Honourable Minister of Environment, Dr. Mohammad Mahmoud, committed to continue the strong collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Agriculture for the successful implementation of the One Health strategic plan.
In closing, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) expressed the agency’s commitment to continue serving as a strong secretariat for One Health functions in Nigeria.

A One Health Approach to Antimicrobial Resistance: Confronting the Resistome in Humans, Animals, and the Environment
This meeting will explore a One Health approach to antimicrobial resistance. Discussions will include an overview of One Health, and explore methods of detection and surveillance, comparisons of data and surveillance systems, diagnostic platform technologies, and strategies which address antimicrobial stewardship across the One Health landscape.

“...Medical schools are partnering with veterinary schools and zoos on cross-species education and research... The push for more cross-species research While doctors [physicians] and veterinarians have long worked together to heal animals and apply lessons from animal care to people, leaders from both fields have been pushing in recent years to make cross-species observations and research on natural health conditions routine, with the aim of improving health for all.
In an October 2018 article in Nature, 18 authors, most from medical and veterinary schools, advocated for a cross-species approach to disorders affecting the brain and behavior, saying that comparative research on humans and other animals will yield insights and treatments benefiting both. “Many of the same neurological and psychiatric conditions affect humans and animals,” they wrote, “yet clinical and research collaborations between physicians and veterinarians remain infrequent.”
... The idea draws lots of nodding heads, though finding the time and money to implement it in medical education and research remains difficult. ... Bringing medical students and veterinarian students together
Among those collaborations are a few such as the one at Harvard, where medical schools work with veterinary schools and zoos to cross-educate students and practitioners. Students might, for instance, help fix a bat’s broken wing, share knowledge about diabetes treatments in humans to advise on treating a diabetic lemur, and conduct a literature review on possible interventions for cancer in a tiger....

The World Veterinary Association (WVA) is happy to announce that per January 1st 2020, Dr Zeev Noga will take up the position of WVA Executive Secretary. He succeeds Dr Jan Vaarten whom, after having served the Association for 10 years, will step back.
Zeev Noga has worked in the WVA secretariat for more than 7 years. During this period, he has built up a broad experience in WVA matters. At the same time, he maintained good contacts with the WVA member organisations and established an extensive international veterinary network, including all major international organisations. Zeev is excited and ready to step in his new role and looks forward to support the global veterinary profession in this position.
WVA trusts that the transition will go smoothly and will not affect its services to the members nor its collaboration with partners.
WVA wishes Zeev Noga much success in his new position and thanks Jan Vaarten for his contributions to the Association over the past decade.

SOULSBY FOUNDATION CALLS FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2020 “ONE HEALTH” FELLOWSHIPS
The Soulsby Foundation has opened a call for applications for the 2020 Travelling Fellowships Programme.
The Foundation supports talented veterinary and medical researchers at an early stage in their careers through these competitively awarded Travelling Fellowships in “One Health”. Applicants must be affiliated to a biomedically relevant academic institution in the UK, USA, EU or Australasia.
Further information and application forms for the Fellowships may be found on-line at www.SoulsbyFoundation.org. The closing date for applications is 31st January, 2020.
The Soulsby Foundation was established in 2016 by Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior, a pioneer and champion of the “One Health” concept which recognises the need to take a multidisciplinary approach to solving global and environmental health challenges.
Lord Soulsby treasured a similar travelling award early in his professional life which he considered to be the catalyst that consolidated his future impressive career. He always sought to inspire colleagues and students to view animal and human medicine as one continuous health-related tapestry and, as the only Past President of the RCVS to have also become President of the RSM, he constantly used this unique position to bring the two professions together.
